Ethiopia’s Abiy Visits Somalia Amid Efforts to Mend Ties
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Mogadishu on Thursday, February 27, 2025 to ease tensions with Somalia. The trip marks a new chapter after the impact of last year’s controversial deal on Ethiopia with Somaliland after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was welcomed. The agreement grants access to Ethiopia at sea in exchange for an agreement to recognize Somaliland’s independence, a tense agreement with Somalia, which claims that Somalia has violated its territory. Leaders who previously met in Türkiye in December laid the foundation for technical negotiations and are now discussing a range of bilateral issues from trade to security. Mohamud visited Addis Ababa in January, and leading experts believe that Abiy’s reciprocal travel signals indicate a renewed commitment to regional stability and cooperation.
