Former African Leaders Appointed to Lead DR Congo Peace Talks

The East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have appointed three former African leaders to promote the new peace process for the Congo Doctoral Conflict. Three older politicians – Kenyan member Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo – will work to achieve a “direct and unconditional ceasefire” between the Congolese Army and the M23 rebels. In addition to the peace process, Karim Khan, the ICC prosecutor who recently arrived in the country, is also investigating the conflict. With the threat of regional wars, these new diplomatic efforts have brought hope for stability in troubled areas.
