US sides with Russia in UN resolutions on invasion of Ukraine

The United States has supported Russia twice in the UN vote to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the change in the Trump administration’s stance on the war.

First, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted it in New York, opposing the European drafted resolution, condemning Moscow’s actions and supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

They then supported a U.N. Security Council drafting a U.S. resolution calling for an end to the conflict, but without criticism of Russia.

The Security Council resolution passed only two key American allies, namely Britain and France, abstained from the vote after vetoing the revised wording.

The competition resolution is owned by the French president Emmanuel Macron visits President Donald Trump at the White House Try to resolve their huge differences in war.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will also visit the new U.S. leader on Thursday.

Trump’s White House has subverted the transatlantic alliance, favored Moscow and doubted the United States’ long-term commitment to European security.

On Monday, U.S. diplomats pushed for a limited resolution to mourn the loss of life during the “Russia-Ukraine conflict” and called for a quick end to the issue when the rift was exposed on the floor of 193 members of UNGA.

European diplomats presented more detailed texts, blamed Russia for its full invasion and supported Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We need to reaffirm the aggression to be condemned and discredited, not rewarded,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa.

UNGA members supported the European resolution with 93 votes, but in extraordinary circumstances the United States did not abstain, but instead voted against it with Russia, Israel, North Korea, Sudan, Belarus, Hungary, Hungary and 11 other states, There are 65 abstentions.

UNGA also passed the U.S. resolution, but will only support Ukrainian language provision after revision, which led to a U.S. abstainment.

The unplanned U.S. resolution was passed by 10 votes, with Britain, France, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia abstaining from the United Nations Security Council, which has 15 members.

Dorothy Camille Shea, the U.S. acting envoy to the United Nations, described the U.S. resolution as “a simple historic statement…an expectation, not backwards. A resolution against a simple idea: ending the war.”

The United States rarely has this been the case with so-called European allies.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine three years ago, the Security Council has been stalemate by Russia’s power, one of its five permanent members, to veto any resolution there.

UNGA has therefore been the main forum for debate wars, but unlike the Security Council, its resolutions are not legally binding on member states.
