Kéré Designs Monument to Honor Revolutionary Leader Thomas Sankara’s Legacy

Prizker Prize winner Francis Kéré paid tribute to Thomas Sankara, revolutionary leader of Burkina Faso, and held a memorial in Ouagadougou. The 87-meter-high structure respects Sankara’s influential legacy with a focus on transformation and renewal. Located in the 1987 assassination site of Sankara, the memorial symbolizes a arduous ramp that symbolizes the struggle for change. The design includes a restaurant, media library, seminars and offices, all of which are interconnected with the Green Promenade. The space, planned to be completed in 2025, aims to educate, unite and provide a meditative environment to reflect on the principles of justice and social equity in Sankara.
