Mirra Andreeva: Dubai victory makes Russian youngest WTA 1000 winner

After becoming the 17-year-old Dubai tennis champion, Mirra Andreeva made history by becoming the youngest WTA 1000 champion.

Russia beat Clara Tauson 6-1 7-6 (7-1) and her victory means she will make her first top ten next week.

Andreeva beat Grand Slam champions Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina on the way to the finals.

“I set a goal for myself and I won’t be in the top ten by the end of this year,” she said.

“It’s the end of February and I’ve done it, so it’s incredible for me.”

Tauson, 22, took a 2-0 lead earlier, but Andreeva quickly settled in her game, defeating the game 2-2.

With the first set in the tiebreak, the two barely split, and Andreeva scored the first six long before Tauson sent it.

Andreeva then dominated the second set, reviving a long-standing lead with a 5-1 lead to seal the junior title in World 38 Tauson.

“I’m very happy with my own play,” Andriva added. “I’m nervous. I think you can see all these double breakdowns, some mistakes in the game.

“So I’m really happy to be able to manage and cope with the stress. It feels so amazing now.

“This is something I dreamed about, and now my dream comes true, so I’m just, I’m speechless now.”
