Manu Bhaker: Shooter named BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year

Her shooter Avani Lekhara BBC Iswoty Para-Sportswoman Award of the Year was presented.

The 23-year-old is the first Indian woman to win three Paralympics, and won gold in Paris after 2020 Tokyo’s gold and bronze medals.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu said: “I thank the entire BBC team for their praise initiative for organizing the BBC Indian athletes.

“The extraordinary athletes recognized through this initiative not only excel in the sport, but also inspire young women to pursue their dreams fearlessly.”

Tim Davie, BBC director who hosted the awards ceremony, said: “Manu Bhaker’s historic Olympic performance was a decisive moment in Indian sports. She has gone from a promising young shooter. The journey to the record Olympics has inspired athletes across the country and beyond.

“We are also honored to celebrate Avani Lekhara as the Athletic Leader of the Year. Her resilience and record-breaking success continue to pave the way for greater inclusion and excellence in Para-Sports.

“The BBC’s commitment to Indian audiences has made our relationship a special one and we are proud to celebrate the achievements of India’s incredible sportswear.”
