Mikaela Shiffrin: Skier speaks about ‘visions of crashing’ again after December injury
Mikaela Shiffrin, the world’s most successful alpine skier, talks openly about her mental health struggle to return to the race after the geek race.
When he leads the second round of the second round, the Americans are set for her 100th World Cup victory Giant slalom of Killington Last December, when she crashed at the end of her run, somersaults hit the safety net.
Shiffrin suffered a stab wound and muscle damage, and she told the BBC’s skiing on Sunday was “weird, rough and painful”.
The 29-year-old was injured for two months but re-electioned to the Alps World Ski Championships in Salbach, Austria.
“From the outside, you look pretty good, you’re back to skiing – but you’re not that good yet,” Shiffrin said.
“I’ve experienced more than ever before or imagined, especially the huge slalom of the gyro.
“Sometimes I get a random view of collapse. It may not be Killington’s crash, it may be the route in front of me, I have a random view, I’m in the net again and something else is stabbing me.”
She teamed up with world downhill champion Breezy Johnson for Tuesday’s women’s team merger event, rejecting Lindsey Vonn’s invitation in the process. The two won gold.
Schifflin said the game with Johnson was a different, positive, and energetic, while her 29-year-old American compatriot just wanted to see her happy.
The medal is just the reward that Shiffrin explained: “As an individual athlete, you never feel like you’ve done enough.
“To be faster, fix other things, there will always be something to do.
“But I can really lean on the breeze. I want to do well for her and she feels the same way for me.”
Shiffrin chose not to compete in the huge slalom, but instead competed on Saturday’s slalom, a match she won four times.
She currently has 15 world championship medals and will break the record if she finishes the match on the podium again.
However, Shiffrin is not sure to add to the count.
“It may not be enough to win a medal, but it is part of the recovery process,” she added.
