Renee Slegers: Arsenal boss ‘never saw myself as a leader’
Slegrs also never viewed herself as a natural leader, and believed that she was “not a complete football player” in her short career.
She spent some time at Arsenal’s Academy and then worked in advanced careers in the spells of Willem II, Djurgardens and Linkoping, where she was Winning the Netherlands Championship in 2016.
But a game against England later that year will be her last as she suffered an ACL injury – the second in her career.
“I didn’t make a decision immediately (retirement)” Slegers said.
“Jodie Taylor scored a zero for England in the fourth minute and I haven’t touched the ball yet, so I wanted to press – but that was when (injury) happened.”
This means she will miss the European Championship on Dutch land in the second summer, a match that the Netherlands continues to win.
“It’s a very difficult thing. They ended up winning the euro at their home court, so I think about it more – I don’t know my future.”
“I’ve been struggling with injuries and a lot of decisions to stop the game.”
