NATO allies “heard clear message of U.S. step up defense spending”

The British Defense Minister warned that there was no negotiation on Ukraine “no Ukraine”.

John Healey presides over NATO Defense Ministers’ Meeting in Brussels on Thursday before U.S. President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin agree to start negotiations to end the war Speech.

“We have seen the phone calls that President Trump saw overnight, and we all want to see lasting peace, without conflict and aggression,” Healy told reporters.

But he added that Russia “still is a threat that Ukraine is far beyond Ukraine”.

He told reporters: “My message… will be no negotiations about Ukraine without Ukraine, and the voice of Ukraine must be at the heart of any negotiations.”

With Trump’s unilateral efforts to end the war, NATO is increasingly difficult to maintain Ukraine’s united front.

Trump said in an article on his Truth Social Platform that he and the Russian president “agree to get our team to start negotiations immediately.”

He did not set a date for a face-to-face meeting with Putin, but later told White House reporters: “We will meet in Saudi Arabia.” He wrote on social media that the couple also invited each other to their respective capitals.

Mark Rutte, the head of the alliance, is still trying to hold the line – saying allies must strengthen their military support for Kiev and Ukraine must participate in any peace negotiations. But in fact, Washington is on the phone.

A call between Trump and President Putin will push NATO off the court after the meeting.

Some defense ministers tried to convey the message that there was no fundamental change, and Healy repeated again that NATO would continue to focus on maintaining familiar boundaries of Ukrainian combat and “put them in the best position to ensure lasting through the power Peace.”

US and UK Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and John Healey at NATO meeting in Brussels

Wednesday, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said European countries must provide an “overwhelming” share of funds For Ukraine.

Hegseth told reporters ahead of Thursday’s meeting that the U.S. attempt to negotiate peace between Ukraine and Russia was “of course not betrayal”, and they had been fighting the invasion of Ukrainian soldiers.

He later added in his speech at the Secretary of Defense that the United States is “committed to speed up the process of foreign military sales” to ensure that “our allies get what they need when they need it.”

Healy said the UK “heard clear information about the intensified information” and pointed to a new set of military aid of £150 million, including Ukrainian drones, tanks and air defense systems.

“The Ukrainians are fighting bravely,” Healy said. “This is our job as Minister of Defense in NATO, putting them in the best position to achieve lasting peace through strength.”

Ukraine is unlikely to return to its pre-2014 borders without realistic prospects under the agreement Ukraine joins NATO military alliance.

NATO members have “Irreversible Pathway” to Promise Support for Future Members For Ukraine.

Healy said on Wednesday that it would take “a certain amount of time” to welcome the country to NATO, stressing that “now” should be a strong position before ensuring Kiev is in a potential peace talks.

British reform leader Nigel Farage also expressed his support for Ukraine’s accession to the coalition, telling GB News that the move was “essential”.

But Washington’s clear message weakened NATO’s solidarity and strength – in an attempt to end the war, it was not ready for military support for Kiev, or to allow Ukraine to join NATO.

It also does not believe that Ukraine should expect the return of all its territories to Russia. This is a very different message.

Rutte tried to save some credibility by urging allies to significantly increase defense spending. He hopes that this will build bridges with Washington and impact.

But President Trump sets a high bar that few people can meet – spending up to 5% of its GDP on defense. Ten years ago, most allies were working to achieve the 2% goal.

Criticism of Donald Trump has been downplayed so far. However, Ukraine’s NATO front has been carefully calibrated – and has been surviving so far – is working hard. Efforts to isolate President Putin as an international pariah.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is braver than most. He said, “He regrets” that the U.S. government had already made concessions to Russia before the negotiations began.
