Boxing: Jay Harris, British and European boxing champion, retires
Harris made his £120 wallet debut at the Newport Center in 2013, retired with a 21-3 record and challenged the world champion, with a group of top Welsh boxers (like Liam Liam Williams sat together as advanced fighters and they weren’t very able to win the ultimate award.
However, with the support of his family and friends, Harris said he was ready to take on the next stage of his life, growing up in a boxing family, a sport that has been a part of his life since childhood.
Harris said his world title was his biggest night in the sport, but following in his father’s footsteps by becoming a British champion, the most satisfying thing is.
He added: “The world championship battle in Texas is there, the whole halo around, the fighter I encountered, that’s just another level, a huge level.”
“But if I were to say one of my most memorable things, winning the UK title might be there for me, just because everyone thought I was done., I know where I am and what I can get Goal, winning the British championship is like an escaped championship.
“When the British title comes out, I’m like ‘I need to do this’, which is good because I win and my old man wins it, so it’s better to keep it in the family legacy.”
Harris’s father Peter was in the corner throughout his career and supported his decision to retire.
So, how will Harris finally look back on his decade of professionalism and his lifelong boxing?
“It’s exciting that I was in a difficult situation with everyone, doing everything hard, winning most of my titles, and I could look back on my career and think I’ve done everything.”
“Honestly, I’ve reached the top and did most of the things the Warrior Dream dreams have to do, and it’s amazing to me with Dad.
“I always say I’m going to retire from boxing, boxing will never retire, I’m going to come out with my own championship.
“Now, I’m so happy to retire. Sometimes I’m so happy. It’s like a little weightlifting, it needs to happen, I’m happy with my decision, and I think it’s important.
“I’m happy with what I get from boxing. I got my house and I can provide it for my family, and that’s important.”
