Everton v Liverpool: David Moyes wants to narrow ‘gulf’ between Merseyside rivals
David Moyes said the gap between his Everton side and Liverpool was “as big as it has been for a long time” as both sides prepare for Wednesday’s Goodison Park (GMT 19:30).
The Toffees have not surpassed the Reds since the 2012-13 season, which is Moyes’ last responsibility before joining Manchester United.
Everton has fought relegation and financial issues in recent years, and Liverpool’s championship has not fallen below fifth in the past eight seasons.
“There is a bay between the two squads and everyone knows the difficulties this club has encountered,” Moyes said.
“The gap between the two teams is probably as big as it has been for a long time. So this is something I have to bridge and start bringing the two clubs closer.
“But I always go back to the past two years, we surpassed Liverpool twice in the league. We spent a few years preparing for this and preparing for us.
“We have a few years to compete with Liverpool again.”
