Google Maps now shows Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America for app users in the U.S.
Now, the Gulf of Mexico is known as the U.S. Google Maps user, in line with President Trump’s controversial terms Executive Order Rename the body of water.
Google changes starting Monday. It follows the Bay Updated Website List Geographic name information systemThis is a government database operated by the Department of the Interior that includes descriptions and location information for more than one million places on U.S. territory.
The system’s new description of the Gulf is an ocean basin that shares coastlines almost equal to the United States and Mexico, which reads: “The Gulf of the United States, formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, has an average depth of 5,300 feet. The description points out that the change is in line with Mr. Trump’s order, titled “Restoring the Great Name of Respect for America”, which he signed on Inauguration Day. While people visiting Google Maps from within the United States will see the name of the Bay of the United States, users in Mexico will continue to see the early titles of the Basin. Google says map users around the world will see these two names.
