Bus plunges off a Guatemala bridge, killing at least 51 passengers

Hector Flores said at least 51 people died on a boat on a bridge in the outskirts of the Guatemala capital on Monday.
Fire spokesman Edwin Villagran said a multiple accident sent the bus off the Baylis Bridge before dawn. Others were seriously injured.
Volunteer fire spokesman Óscar Sánchez said the children were victims.
According to Carlos Hernández, spokesman for the Guatemala Municipal Fire Department, the bus entered a sewage-contaminated stream after the bus collided with two vehicles and lost control. He said it crashed through metal safety railings, upside down and struggling survivors.
The bus comes from Progreso, northeast of the capital. It’s a busy bus route that crosses a highway bridge across a stream.

President Bernardo Arévalo expressed his condolences and announced his national condolences.
