Mikaela Shiffrin, U.S. skiing champ, says post-injury PTSD will force her to skip defending giant slalom title

Shiffrin ranked 10th in the slalom of Courchevel in France last month and is still planning to compete at Saturday’s World Series – her best event – her best event. While giving up the huge slalom, Shiffrin decided to join a new team merger event on Tuesday and will pair with freshly crowned downhill gold medalist Breezy Johnson.
The combined race requires one racer to take the downhill and another race in a slalom run, their two additions to determine the final result.
Other U.S. teams for the event are Super-G bronze medalists Lauren Macuga and Paula Moltzan; Lindsey Vonn and AJ were injured; and Jacqueline Wiles and Katie Hensien.
Vonn once ran against Shiffrin in “Dreams”, including two of the most successful female World Cup skiers. But the U.S. coaching staff selected pairings based on Saturday’s downhill and slalom rankings.
“I have been playing since I was 11. We played with the Toplino Islands in the Whistler Cup,” Shiffrin said. “We have been roommates, competitors, friends… it’s so cool. ”
Johnson recently returned from a 14-month ban, violating three “wheels” of the anti-doping protocol.
“She knows the spiritual challenges of the sport better than anyone else,” Schiffflin said. “She has fought to get here and now she is the world champion… Her journey, perseverance and determination inspired my pain .”
