Silent Witness creator Nigel McCrery dies aged 71

Nigel McCrery, the creator of the TV crime drama “The Silent Witness” and the New Skill, passed away at the age of 71.
His agent confirmed the news of his death to BBC News “a heavy heart”.
The screenwriter and novelist were diagnosed with a terminal illness in October 2024.
The silent witness follows a team of forensic pathologists to investigate crime, one of the BBC’s longest dramas. New tips on a group of retired detectives helping police with cold cases, have run 12 series over the past decade.
His agent told BBC News: “We have a heavy heart and we share the news about the death of screenwriter, writer and producer Nigel McCrery.
“With creativity such as the beloved BBC series The Silent Witnesses and New Skills, Nigel has attracted and inspired the audience in his work.
“His numerous contributions to the arts will always be remembered. Nigel’s career is incredible and will be greatly missed. Our ideas are with his family.”

Nigel McCrery worked as a police officer in Nottingham before starting his career in TV in Nottingham.
After leaving Nottinghamshire Police, he joined the BBC’s graduate admission program in 1990 and soon entered the drama department.
He used his background to create backups on policing, a drama about police operations support. It operated between 1995 and 1997.

He then went on to create the TV series “Silent Witness” in 1996.
It follows forensic pathologists and scientists investigating crime and trying to catch the person in charge.
Originally starring Amanda Burton and Emilia Fox, it became one of the BBC’s most enduring dramas. Its series 28 was aired earlier this year.
McCrery created new tricks in 2005.
The show focused on three retired police officers who were selected to help resolve cold cases and became a vehicle starring Dennis Waterman for 10 years.
He also wrote several novels and many non-fiction books.
