South Africa condemns attack in Syria

Republic of South Africa: Department of International Relations and Cooperation

The Government of South Africa condemns in the strongest possible terms the continued aggression perpetrated by the State of Israel against the Syrian Arab Republic. The recent attack on 14 November 2024 in the Damascus suburb of Mazeh, close to the South African Embassy, other diplomatic missions and United Nations offices, was a blatant disregard for international law and the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic.

The South African Government expresses its sympathy and condolences to the Government and people of Syria, especially the families of those who lost their lives in the recent attacks.

Continued aggression undermines regional and international peace and security. Since October 7, 2023, more than 120 attacks have occurred in Syria, exacerbating the current worsening humanitarian crisis in the Middle East.

South Africa calls on the United Nations to hold those responsible accountable in accordance with the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
