Sri Lanka hit by nationwide power cut
Power has gradually been restored in Sri Lanka after left-wing buildings across the country, including hospitals that have to rely on generators.
Officials say it may take several hours to get electricity across the island, but medical facilities and water purification plants have been given priority.
Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody allegedly caused power cuts, saying the animal “contacts with our grid transformers, causing the system to be imbalanced.”
The Ceylon Electric Power Commission (CEB) said the cuts were caused by an emergency at a sub-station south of Colombo and did not provide further details.
“Engineers are working hard to resume services as soon as possible,” the minister said.
“We are doing everything we can to restore island-wide power failures as soon as possible,” CEB said.
There are 22 million hospitals and businesses on the island who have been using generators or inverters.
