Alaska plane recovery efforts hindered by “difficult conditions” as wreckage stuck on moving ice floe
Recovery work for the rest of the victims in the plane Missing near NomiInvestigators say Alaska is being suppressed by “hard conditions.”
National Transportation Safety Commission chairman Jennifer Homendy said in a press conference on Saturday that the wreckage of Bering Airlines 445 travels about five miles a day on the ice. She added that the area where the Cessna 208 caravan collapsed was also expected to have some snow, which would hinder complex action.
“The NTSB knows that villages like Norm and Alaska Airlines are close communities, so this tragedy will affect many communities,” Homendy said. “Please know, we will work to determine how this happened, which is in Alaska and across the United States.” The ultimate goal of improving safety.”
Homenday said victim recovery was the main focus of the NTSB, followed by the recovery of caravan wreckage. All 10 people, including the pilot, are believed to have died in the crash, and three bodies have recovered. None of them were confirmed.
U.S. Coast Guard
The Coast Guard said Friday that seven other victims are believed to be inside the plane but are “not accessible at this time due to the condition of the plane.”
Investigators told CBS News Transport Correspondent Kris Van Cleave on Saturday that the plane was not equipped with a voice or data logger because it was not necessary. Once the victim recovers, authorities will search for other aerospace components that store electronic data, which may help to more clearly depict what causes the crash.
Officials earlier said it was the Bering caravan missing on February 6 on the way to Nome, with rapid loss of altitude and speed, prompting the Coast Guard to launch a search and rescue operation.
