Prosiect Cymru: FAW chief Mooney unapologetic over Welsh EFL clubs’ European bid

“They have an excellent membership group – they have an offer, read the quotes, they choose to stay in the English system and have good luck for them.

“They will certainly strengthen our Prime Minister.

“It’s a unique opportunity as we’ve been on 16 teams in 2026-27, and it’s a one-time opportunity to make this offer to the Town of Messer.

“I’m very excited that FAW can make this offer to Merthyr Town and fully respect their view of playing a better role in the English language system.”

FAW has offered Merthyr a deal that is said to be worth up to £6m to join the top Wales pilot in 2026, Mooney insists that the Cymru League clubs also provide financial support.

“We didn’t talk about the offer at all, so there’s a different story where the numbers come from,” Mooney said.

“We are very happy with our offer.

“We have made a huge plan for Prime Minister Cymru, and we have said we are putting £6 million into the league itself, but that is always available.

“In the next few years, there will be millions of pounds for clubs that want to improve their facilities.

“We have a lot of conversations with Cymru Premier clubs across the country, and these projects are similar to the types of things we talk about about Merthyr.

“We are really ambitious about Welsh football.”
