Mary Fowler: Manchester City’s bright light’ as club reach Women’s League Cup final
Manager Gareth Taylor said Mary Fowler showed she was a “real bright light” that bounced up from the fine that saved Manchester City into the Women’s League Cup final .
It proved a grand evening against Arsenal in the Meadow Park.
Fowler opened the score in the 26th minute, and an amazing strike swept the goal’s face and went into the upper right corner.
Her penalty kick was saved shortly after two-time defending champion Arsenal reached level.
However, she became the heroine and redeemed herself with a 95-minute championship to ensure City avoided the Gunners’ second failure in five days.
Taylor added: “Mary is great – you know you won’t realize she missed the fine.”
“Her level hasn’t changed at all. You can see that she’s really determined to try to help the team and thankfully she ended up getting the game.”
Former Arsenal and Scottish defender Jen Beattie agrees that Fowler is the “difference” for City.
“Mary Fowler has been consistent. She has done a great job throughout the game. She has provided her own efforts in many scenes trying to get the ball and make things happen.”
Taylor said he was happy to see Fowler recently seen in a “warm-up form” with five goals and three assists in the last five women’s Premier League games.
It was this form, and Aoba Fujino’s impressive performance on the opposite wing, which seemed to have taken Chloe Kelly from Taylor’s starting lineup before England International took a loan to move to Arsenal.
“I think she has the ability to play in any of the three frontline positions,” Taylor said.
“I know she doesn’t like playing 9th place, but I think she does a really good job.
“When you believe in Mary and she feels confident, you see her really the best.”
