Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Launches In-Country Capacity-Building Workshop for Educators and School Teacher to Mainstream Disaster Risk Reduction into School Curriculum in Guinea-Bissau

ECOWAS has launched a three-day “In-country Capacity Building Workshop for School Teachers and Educators” aimed at mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) into the school curriculum in Guinea-Bissau. The workshop, taking place at the Hotel Dunia in Bissau from 13 to 15 November 2024, aims to provide educators with the knowledge and skills needed to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on communities and schools, ensuring that young learners have a A safer, more resilient future.

The seminar was hosted by the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Guinea-Bissau, Ambassador Ngozi Ukaye on behalf of the Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, and the Secretary of State for Public Order in Guinea-Bissau, José Carlos Macedo Monte Mr. Luo co-hosted the opening ceremony.

Ambassador Ukaje highlighted the important role of education in disaster preparedness and emphasized the Commission’s commitment to building resilience through education in line with the ECOWAS Vision 2050 of “Peace and Prosperity for All”. The workshop is fully funded by ECOWAS through the Humanitarian and Social Affairs Budget as an integral part of the ECOWAS Action Plan, which prioritizes the development of programs to support disaster-related education, research and technology. She reiterated ECOWAS’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and resilience across the region.

HE Macedo Monteiro commended ECOWAS for its long-standing contribution to the region, specifically mentioning the 2022 Post-Flood Response Project, which has provided $670,902 to Guinea-Bissau to provide humanitarian support to the affected population assistance. He stressed the need to train communities to respond quickly and effectively to disasters, especially in vulnerable areas, to minimize future risks and promote recovery.
