Labour readmits four MPs suspended for rebelling

Four MPs suspended by Labor have been admitted to the parliamentary party for their government vote on welfare caps.

Labour has restored the whip of Richard Bergon, Ian Bourne, Imran Hussein and Rebecca Long Bailey after serving as an independent for only more than six months.

The other three rebelled in July’s votes – former shadow ministers John McDonald, Apsana Bergm and Zara Sultana – still being suspended.

To the party’s left, all seven MPs are on the party’s left, but three MPs who have not been suspended have continued to criticize the government in the past six months.

Sultana wrote on X that she only found the news from the media reports.

The MP in southern Coventry added: “It turns out that speaking out for Palestine remains a crime that deserves punishment.

Their suspension comes after they voted for the SNP proposal to repeal the dual-child welfare cap, which prevented almost all parents from claiming universal credit or child tax credit for more than two children.

Although the government has won the vote comfortably, it marks Sir Kyle Starmer’s Premier League rebellion.
