How to Optimize US Foreign Aid for Africa’s Development
The sudden pause of foreign aid to the United States by the Trump administration could harm millions of dollars in low-income countries, which relies on this funding in the health budgets of low-income countries. Gregory Rockson, co-founder and CEO of Mpharma, believes that while humanitarianism is bound to protect these lives, the current model of permanent aid (no defined sunset clause) is only for the parent. Reliance eliminates any motivation to be self-sufficient. He believes that better resource allocation and private capital integration can maintain important services while empowering local development capabilities. Rockson proposed a two-to-three-year transition period, during which detailed sustainability plans and local ownership strategies could be implemented. This balanced approach will protect immediate welfare and lay the foundation for long-term self-reliance development, shifting from an unsustainable and fragile model of assistance to a model that encourages local businesses and resilience.
