Council shake-up sees elections delayed in nine areas
Angela Rayner, secretary of local government, said in East Sussex, West Sussex, Essex, Throrock, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Norfolk Island, Local elections in Suffolk and Surrey will be postponed for one year to allow for major reorganizations.
Reiner said in his speech to the council that the delay would pave the way for “generational pass from Whitehall to Town Hall.”
She said that the elections to be held by the authorities that want to be scrapped would be “a expensive and irresponsible waste for taxpayers.”
But, Conservative Shadow Minister Kevin Hollinrake said the “massive postponement” was a “worrying day of democracy.”
The reorganization of local councils announced by the government last year will merge smaller district councils with local national councils to create a single body called a single authority.
The new corpse will represent a population of about 500,000.
