Pat Cummins: Australia captain ‘hugely unlikely’ to be fit for Champions Trophy
Cummins’ absence will lead Australia’s more than 50 world champions Australia decides to make a decision on the captain, while all-around and vice captain Mitchell Marsh has already had late issues.
McDonald’s said Steve Smith is currently leading in Cummins’ absence in Sri Lanka and has served as Australia’s captain in 59 one-day international matches, while batsman Travey Travis Head is two choices.
Head has never been captained in ODI, but has been in charge of a T20, which was England’s failure in Cardiff last year.
“Pat Cummins can’t recover any kind of bowling, so his unlikely is big, so that means we do need a captain,” McDonald’s said.
“They will be two of the two we look at for leadership positions.”
The championship trophy in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates will begin on February 19.
Australia meets England, Afghanistan and South Africa at the opening ceremony on February 22.
The team must change their initial team by Wednesday, February 12. Left militaryman Mitchell Starc and seaman Nathan Ellis are currently the only suitable fast bowler on the Australian team.
Seamen Seam Abbott, left-handed agents Spencer Johnson and Quick Lance Morris are part of Pakistan’s 2-1 victory over the team in Australia’s recent ODI series.
