The U.S. Embassy in Cameroon announces the completion of the Improvised Explosive Device Threat and Awareness Course in Yaoundé from November 4 to 8, 2024. The training is a collaborative project between the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the Government of Cameroon.

This move marks a milestone in the enduring partnership between our two governments, which are united in our commitment to combating terrorism and protecting communities.

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) have long been the weapon of choice for insurgent and terrorist groups targeting security forces and civilians around the world and in war zones. The devastating impact of IEDs is well-documented and continues to evolve, with terrorist groups continuing to share their deadly innovations and posing a serious threat to the world.

During the intensive five-day event, participants delved into the complexities of the IED threat, emerging tactics, best practices and countermeasures. Participants in the course include law enforcement officials, customs officers, border guards and internal security personnel who are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and mitigate IED threats.

“This training is a testament to the close cooperation between the United States and Cameroon,” said Joseph Love, regional security officer at the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé. “By working together, we can strengthen our collective security and protect our communities from the scourge of terrorism.”

Participants explored a range of key topics, including understanding the IED threat, vehicle-borne IEDs, insider threats and the emerging use of drones in terrorist activities. The course ensures accessibility and inclusivity for all attendees and supports U.S. efforts to develop security cooperation and counterterrorism efforts with Cameroon. The United States values its partnership with Cameroon and its dedication to combating the threat of terrorism. Together we will continue to promote stability and security in Cameroon and Central Africa.

This collaboration underscores the United States and Cameroon’s unwavering commitment to protecting our communities from terrorist threats and advancing Cameroon’s efforts to achieve lasting peace and security.
