Real Bedford wants to be bigger than Luton Town
BBC News, Bedfordshire
The Bitcoin podcast owner of a non-league football club says they have been ridiculed for three years but “now we have some successful people coming through”.
Peter McCormack, who co-owns Royal Bedford, said locally he wanted the club to be bigger than Kettering Town, then Northampton and then Milton Keynes , then Luton,” eventually reaching the Premier League.
McCormack, from Bedford – about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of London – said Proposed merger with Bedford Town Football Club is “about the things both clubs have achieved for the town”.
He added: “When we started we had 40 fans and a small stadium” but “at the end of the day I want Bedford Town to win”.
Bedford Town are in drama in the Confederation Premier Midlands game, based in Cardington, Eyrie.
Real Bedford currently sit in the Southern League Division One Central Division and play at neighboring McMullen Park.
April 2024, Gemini founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss Invested $4.5 million in Bitcoin (approximately £3.6m) on McCormack’s side as co-owner.
McCormack said: “I think Wrexham’s goal is the Premier League and they’re up there now, backed by Ryan Reynolds and his fortune, but Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss’s net worth is worth twenty times, twice as much.”
He said the “stronger” merged entity would continue to use Bitcoin as the club’s financial tool.
McCormack said: “Short goals have been the game of football for men’s teams for ten years.
“If we go up this year it will be three promotions in three years and we’ll be left with three promotions in seven years, which I think is ambitious but we think we can do it.”
Regarding the merger, he said Bedford Town were “awaiting to hear back from the FA and the Southern League, who have approved it, where they will position the teams in the pyramid”.
McCormack said if approved they would use Bedford Town’s ground which has 3G which is “very cool” and “so we don’t lose games due to the weather”.
He said the legal agreement for the merger must be completed by the end of March for the merger to happen before the end of the season.
Bedford Town director Jon Taylor previously said: Proposed merger Represents a unique opportunity to build on this legacy and take football to the next level in Bedford. “
