Tanzania’s Chadema Party Faces Leadership Choice Ahead of 2025 Election
Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, is preparing for elections in October 2025. Before that can happen, however, the party must identify its leader and flag-bearer for the upcoming elections. Chadema is led by current chairman Freeman Mbowe and deputy Tondu Lissu, who have different views on the party’s future direction. Mbowi advocates continuity and emphasizes past successes, while Lissu calls for change and a reallocation of Chadema’s resources to include grassroots members. He also advocated for a structured leadership transition, including the reintroduction of term limits. Despite their differences, Mbowe and Lisu united to challenge the ruling CCM (Chama Cha Mapinduzi) party, which has dominated Tanzanian politics since 1964.
