Moving companies are difficult to vet. Since I cannot actually rate each mover’s moving skills myself, I rely on the experiences of other customers. The most reliable source is Form GSA3080a form completed by government employees to evaluate movers after they are transferred for work. This data is compiled into an overall rating for movers. From my initial list of over 50 interstate moving companies, I removed any companies that scored below average.
Since then, I have investigated the records of each company Ministry of Transport. Does it employ enough drivers to handle cross-country shipments in a timely manner? What is its safety record? I eliminated any company with a below-average vehicle or driver inspection score.
Then I tested what I could: the quote process. I filled out online quote forms for 22 moving companies and then waited for my phone to explode. Getting a quote over the phone only takes about 10 minutes. I hate any company that puts a sales pitch before my questions or asks for a large deposit immediately. The best moving companies will ask you to provide a detailed list of your moving items before providing a quote, and they will be able to explain their policies in clear, simple language.
Finally, I dug into Better Business Bureau reviews and complaints. It’s not about the overall numbers – moving is an industry where people typically only leave reviews when something goes wrong – but more about looking for patterns in complaints. I also prefer to be certified as promote By American Trucking Associations. This means they have passed an annual review of their business practices, including complaint history.
