Champions League permutations: What Man City & PSG need to qualify

Manchester City’s performance in all competitions has been surprisingly poor.

Guardiola’s side have won just five of 17 games in all competitions since October when Tottenham knocked them out of the Carabao Cup.

In the Champions League, Manchester City took seven points from their first three games but then lost to sports and juventus and squandered a three-goal lead. Feyenoord drew 3-3 at the Etihad Stadium.

City are hoping to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window, although new signings will not be available for the league stages.

“Of course it’s a very important game for us and PSG, but we also have a home game against Club Brugge,” Guardiola said.

“I don’t know how many points we need. Mathematically it’s six (of course), but maybe four, maybe three.

“But if we don’t advance, we have to admit we’re not good enough.”

PSG, meanwhile, are yet to lose in Ligue 1 but have failed to replicate that form in Europe – picking up just seven points from six games with three losses, one draw and two wins.

In the standings, they are the lowest-ranked team among Europe’s so-called “big clubs” and are currently in the knockout stages.

Luis Enrique’s side suffer defeat Bayern Munich, arsenal and atletico madridand a home draw PSV.

“The reality is we should win the games against PSV and Atletico,” Enrique said. “With these (extra) five points, we have qualified for the next round.

“But I’m very optimistic and confident. Is this a must-win game? The obligation is for all players to give 100 per cent and I take the same attitude every day.

“You might lose games, but that’s life. The most important thing is dedication.”
