Mozambique’s Venâncio Mondlane Open to Inclusive Government Talks – Africa.com
Mozambique’s opposition leader Venancio Mondlane has said he is willing to join President Daniel Chapo’s government if key demands to resolve the country’s political crisis are met. Mondlane is running in October’s elections as an independent and has strong support from Mozambique’s young people. When El Chapo was declared the winner, Mondlane claimed malfeasance and encouraged his supporters to strike and protest. The resulting riots resulted in the deaths of more than 300 people. To resolve the crisis, Mondlane demanded the release of 5,000 detained protesters, compensation for the families of those killed in the riots, and free medical care for the injured. Meanwhile, President El Chapo has said he intends to form an inclusive government and address concerns over electoral reform, freedom of expression and human rights. He also revealed that negotiations are ongoing to evaluate potential government players, including Mondlane, on the basis of merit and patriotism. Mundelein temporarily suspended the protests and expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue.
