Champions League: Nuri Sahin sacked by Borussia Dortmund after defeat to Bologna

Borussia Dortmund sack head coach Nouri Shaheen after game Lost to Bologna 1-2 in the Champions League.

Since the winter break, the German team has lost four consecutive games in all competitions.

Tuesday’s loss to Bologna was their third Champions League defeat of the season, meaning last season’s runners-up need to beat Shakhtar Donetsk in their final league game to have any chance of automatically advancing to the knockout stages.

They have suffered three consecutive defeats in the domestic league at the start of 2025 and currently sit 10th in the Bundesliga, seven points off the top four, thus jeopardizing their chances of returning to the Champions League next season.

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Lars Riken said: “We attach great importance to Nouri Shaheen and his work and we hope for a long-term cooperation until the end. Together we hope to achieve a transformation in the sporting world.”

“This decision hurts me personally, but it was inevitable after the Bologna game.”

Sahin, 36, who has two spells with the club, said: “Unfortunately we were unable to fulfill Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season.

“I wish this special club all the best.”

Sahin was appointed as Dortmund coach in June 2024, replacing Edin Terzic, who left the club after retiring from the club. Lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
