Instagram’s Newest Tactic to Entice TikTokkers Is a Video Editing App
For all the changes Meta has announced over the past month, the company seems to be returning to its roots in at least this way: announcing a new feature that sounds all too familiar. Or in this case, a new app. On Monday, Instagram head Adam Mosseri Announce The company has been developing a new video editing app called Edits that will help creators brainstorm and edit videos.
Although Mosseri claims that Edits will be “more than just a video editing app,” that’s its primary purpose, and it should include standard editing tools. The Edits app will also include a higher-quality camera (ostensibly compared to the Instagram camera), the ability to share drafts with friends, and the ability to track Reels performance if you decide to post your edited video on Instagram, similar to Instagram’s opinion.
Mosseri also said the app is intended for people who shoot and edit videos on their phones, rather than those using the desktop app. This could mean that Edits will be a more beginner-friendly editing program, although we’ll have to wait and see what the specifics of that app are to know for sure. You can pre-order the app now and it will be available at Apple App Store The Android app will launch on March 13th.
From what we know so far, Edits sounds very similar to CapCut, TikTok’s popular video editing app. Because CapCut is owned by the same parent company as TikTok, it faces the same legal challenges under U.S. “divest or debar” laws. When Trump is sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, one of his first actions will be to sign an executive order Give TikTok a 75-day stay. The order gives the new administration time to review potential national security threats posed by the app, but the action could face legal challenges. Both CapCut and TikTok are currently active.
Instagram and its creators will face many other changes this year. Earlier this month, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta would be ending its years-long fact-checking programas well as easing the rules of its hateful conduct policy to limit the types of speech allowed on the Meta platform. LGBTQ and digital advocacy groups say serious worry About how these changes will impact security and the environment on the platform.
