Africa Faces Significant but Surmountable Challenges in Fostering Doctoral Education – Africa.com
A study of South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Nigeria shows growing demand for PhD graduates, highlighting barriers such as limited funding, resource constraints, regulatory issues and personal coping difficulties. Progress is complicated by a “brain drain”, with many successful academics seeking opportunities abroad, depriving their home countries of critical expertise. However, these challenges also provide opportunities to strengthen local academic systems. By investing capital, resources and mentorship, African countries can retain talent, foster innovation and build strong academic communities to drive transformative development across the continent.
