Australian Open 2025: Emma Raducanu thrashed by Iga Swiatek in Melbourne
Britain’s Emma Raducanu suffered the heaviest loss of her career as second seed Iga Swiatek showed in a lopsided Australian Open third-round match advantages.
The 22-year-old Raducanu endured a miserable afternoon at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, suffering a 6-1, 6-0 defeat.
The world No. 61 lost serve five times in a match that lasted just one hour and 10 minutes.
It was the second time in her career that she lost in just one match, losing 6-0 6-1 to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in Sydney three years ago.
Raducanu couldn’t handle Swiatek’s top-end spin-heavy shots and athleticism, making a lot of mistakes at the baseline – especially on the backhand – as the pressure showed.
Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek has never been past the Melbourne semi-finals and her outstanding performance once again sent a warning to her title rivals.
The 23-year-old from Poland won her opening three games in straight sets without losing a single serve.
“I just love playing,” said Swiatek, who saved five of 12 break points. “I hit a few shots and I thought ‘this is what I’m practicing for’.
“I feel very confident that I can push for more at the end.
“It was important to convert all those break points and I’m happy with this performance.”
