Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) strongly condemns the armed attack on two of its clearly marked vessels in Upper Nile State on the afternoon of Wednesday 15 January 2025, South Sudan. The boats, carrying six MSF personnel, were sailing along the river back to Ulang after delivering essential medical supplies to Nasir County Hospital. The attack put the safety of humanitarian workers at risk and disrupted the delivery of critical medical assistance to those in need.

One staff member was injured while fleeing the attack and is currently receiving treatment. Although all staff arrived safely in Ulang, the attack seriously violated humanitarian principles and international law.

Zakaria Mwatia, head of the Médecins Sans Frontières mission in South Sudan, said: “Such attacks on health care workers are unacceptable and highlight the inadequacy of humanitarian organizations’ operations in South Sudan. Stable environment. “People living in Nasir and Ulang counties already have limited access to health care, and the impact of this violence further jeopardizes the delivery of basic medical services, putting them at greater risk.”

As a result of the attack, MSF was forced to suspend all outreach activities in Nasir and Ulang counties. We call for immediate measures to ensure the safety and protection of humanitarian workers and the unimpeded provision of basic medical services to those in need.
