Australian Open 2025 results: Aryna Sabalenka progresses to round four after battling win
Top seed Sabalenka defeated Denmark’s Clara Towson in straight sets to continue her bid for a third consecutive Australian Open title.
The 26-year-old Belarusian prevailed 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena but prevailed in two hours and six minutes to advance. Round 4.
There were 11 breaks of serve in a game that quickly shifted momentum at Melbourne Park.
“That was a great fight,” Sabalenka said.
“She played incredible tennis. It was really tough to play against her today.
“I’m really happy that I was able to stay in the game and honestly, I was able to push myself to the limit to get this win.”
Eight of the 11 breaks of serve occurred in the first set, with both sides battling it out, with Towson winning the first service game of the match in the eighth game.
After Sabalenka broke serve for the fourth time, the 22-year-old Towson saved four set points to force the match into a tie-break, but the world No. 1 finally seized the fifth opportunity to thunder with The forehand sealed the victory.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Sabalenka struggling to find a serve, but she eventually broke in the ninth game, the longest of seven deuces of the match, before serving for the win to secure Melbourne. Seventeen consecutive wins.
Despite three grueling matches, Sabalenka did not drop a set in week two at Melbourne Park and notched her 30th victory in 31 hard-court Grand Slam matches since the start of 2023.
Sabalenka will face Poland’s Magdalena Frech or teenage 14th seed Mira Andreeva in the next round.
