Masters: Shaun Murphy into semis despite maximum 147 miss
A decade ago, Murphy beat Robertson in the final for his only victory in the tournament, setting the tone for a high-quality match with a 90-point break in the opening seconds.
When the Australian responded with a 79 in the next over, it looked like a classic bite was coming.
However, that didn’t materialize, with Murphy pinching the black ball by one point in the crucial fifth inning and narrowly missing a pot on the ball.
When he hit a black ball in the sixth game, he was severely punished as his opponent broke serve at 108 to bring the score back two games.
Robertson failed to regain that form after falling 5-1 to John Higgins in the first round, but he was seen willing Murphy to come on in the closing seconds as he came very close to finishing ninth in his career A 147 shot.
“I can’t believe it. It’s a shame for everyone watching. I feel so sorry for Sean,” Robertson added.
“I was playing really well and when both guys are playing really well, the smallest gap or gap can make the difference. You have to tip your hat to Sean for how well he played.”
