Actor Timothy West dies aged 90

One of Britain’s most popular and versatile actors, Timothy West, has died aged 90, his family has announced.

He is known for his roles in the comedy Brass, sitcom Not Going Out and soap operas Coronation Street and EastEnders, and has had a distinguished career on stage.

The actor is survived by his wife, “Fawlty Towers” star Prunella Scales, to whom he was married for 61 years.

In a statement, Juliet, Samuel and Joseph West described their father as “living a long and extraordinary life both on and off the stage.”

West leaves behind “a sister, a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren,” the family said, adding: “He will be greatly missed by all of us.

“We would like to thank the incredible NHS staff at St George’s Hospital, Tooting Hospital and Avery Wandsworth Hospital for their loving care in his final days.”

The actor was born in Bradford in 1934, the son of actor Lockwood West.

He rose to fame on stage and screen in the 1960s, and the 1970s BBC adaptations of Richard II and Edward II saw him reprise his acclaimed theater roles.
