Emma Raducanu apologised to Andy Murray to avoid ‘bad blood’
Emma Raducanu says she apologized to Andy Murray for withdrawing from Wimbledon mixed doubles last year because she didn’t want a “discord” to arise between the pair.
Murray was due to play alongside Raducanu in his final match at the All England Club, but his fellow Briton withdrew from the mixed doubles due to “some stiffness” in his right wrist.
The former men’s world number one was not allowed to find a replacement partner as the draw was already completed and is said to be “disappointed” by the decision to end his Wimbledon career.
It meant Murray’s last match of the tournament was an earlier defeat in the men’s doubles with brother Jamie.
Responding to TV presenter Marcus Buckland’s post on X, Murray’s mother Judy called Raducanu’s decision “surprising”, writing: “Yes, surprising. “
After receiving a series of negative responses, she later wrote: “Not sure anyone understands the sarcasm right now. Pretty sure scheduling… will play a big role in any decision-making.”
Raducanu addressed the issue after her second-round win over Amanda Anisimova at the Australian Open on Thursday.
“I sent him (Andy Murray) a long message afterwards basically apologizing for any trouble I had caused at Wimbledon, which I thought was definitely the last thing I wanted,” La Dukanu said.
“He’s someone I’ve always looked up to growing up and I don’t want to have any bad feelings or bad feelings with him.
“I sent him a long message and he took it very well and replied saying he was disappointed but he understood.”
Murray, who retires after competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, also competed at the Australian Open as part of Novak Djokovic’s coaching staff.
“We are good now,” Raducanu added. “We walk past each other and say, ‘Hello,’ ‘Good job.’ Obviously it’s cool to see him and Novak (Djokovic) here, too.”
