Despite the disputed election results, Daniel Chapo takes office as President of Mozambique. Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who recently returned from exile, has vowed to stage daily protests throughout El Chapo’s term if necessary. He accused the government of suppressing peace, adding that members of his team were fired upon with live rounds during demonstrations last week. Protests that began after the election results were announced last October have left more than 300 people dead, according to election monitoring group Plataforma DECIDE. International observers, including the European Union’s delegation to the country, pointed to electoral irregularities such as altering the results. Following these reports, some civil society groups petitioned the African Union not to recognize El Chapo’s presidency. However, a number of African leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, attended the inauguration.
