The United States (U.S.) Government Through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Strengthens Ethiopia’s Malaria Response with Critical Donation to the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI)
The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), donated 175 computer terminals to the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) to support Ethiopia’s fight against malaria. The donation event held at EPHI included a tour of the USAID-supported Emergency Operations Center, laboratory and slide library demonstrating quality assurance of malaria laboratory diagnostics as part of an integrated approach to malaria control.
USAID Mission Director Scott Hocklander, who attended the tour before speaking at the computer handover ceremony, highlighted EPHI’s critical role in responding to the alarming rise in malaria cases across Ethiopia. “The work EPHI does is critical to the health and well-being of Ethiopians,” he said. “These computer terminals, along with emergency operations centers and laboratories, will significantly enhance Ethiopia’s ability to rapidly diagnose and respond to malaria outbreaks.”
The donated computer terminals will be distributed to health centers across Ethiopia to provide real-time data collection, analysis and quality assurance for malaria testing performed in the field. This will lead to faster, more accurate diagnosis, ensuring patients receive timely, life-saving treatment.
Data collected by these terminals will be transmitted to EPHI’s Emergency Operations Center, a state-of-the-art facility supported by USAID. It will provide staff there with real-time malaria statistics across Ethiopia, allowing for informed decision-making, effective resource allocation and effective outbreak response. The laboratory and slide bank, also supported by USAID, play a critical role in quality assurance of malaria testing and training of health workers.
Mission Director Scott Hochland said these donated workstations are just a small part of the physical commodity support the U.S. government provides directly to the Department of Health. The support includes more than $27.5 million worth of antiretroviral supplies, early infant diagnostics, quality assessment panels, laboratory equipment and more through 2025.
In closing remarks, the mission director praised the dedication and professionalism of EPHI staff and health care workers across Ethiopia and emphasized the importance of collaboration among USAID, EPHI and other partners in the fight against malaria.
