Opposition Party Wins All Seats in Mauritius’ Historic Election – Africa.com
The opposition Alliance for Change in Mauritius achieved a landslide victory in the national election, winning all 62 directly contested parliamentary seats. The result marked a strong rejection of Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth’s ruling coalition, the Militant Socialist Movement, which failed to secure a single seat. Jugnauth, who has been president since 2017, backed down before all the votes were counted, admitting his government’s failure. The election results will return former Prime Minister Naveen Ramgoolam, who twice led Mauritius, to office. Officially, a total of 70 parliamentary seats are expected to be confirmed, including the two seats in Rodrigues and the eight seats nominated by the Electoral Supervisory Commission. It was Mauritius’s 12th election since independence in 1968, underscoring the country’s reputation as a stable democracy and highlighting its resilient financial, tourism and agricultural economies.
