Lollies to be given to Leeds city clubbers to keep them quiet

A nightclub in Leeds will hand out lollipops to help residents keep quiet after receiving noise complaints from residents of nearby apartment blocks.

The sweets will be handed out to people as they leave Home and Carousel, once city center venues are allowed to remain open at a later date.

The Albion Street venue’s application for an extra hour of service per day was approved at a council hearing on Tuesday, with clubs now allowed to sell alcohol until 04:00 Sunday to Thursday and before 05:00 at weekends.

David Nejrup, director of operations at Home and Carousel, said giving away lollipops to club members worked well at other nightclubs and bars.

The venue opened last year on the site of the city’s former Tiger Tiger pub and is divided into different parts.

The Carousel is a bar featuring arcade games, while the Home is a nightclub, although both are run by the same operator.

according to Local Democracy Reporting ServiceLeeds City Council’s licensing subcommittee has been told there is a trend of venues in the city delaying their openings.

But councilors heard people living in nearby K2 flats had concerns about noise and anti-social behaviour.

Tony Whitfield, representing the K2 tenants, said there had been problems in the past under the venue’s previous name and operator.

“Sound really resonates in buildings,” he said.

However, Nejerup said noise-restriction measures at the venue include moving outdoor smoking areas and using acoustic panels in the downstairs club area.

“There should be no noise leakage from that nightclub,” he said.

Meanwhile, talking about the idea of giving away lollipops to club members at the venue, Nejerup added: “As silly as it sounds, people tend to get quiet when they have something in their mouth. ”
