Chelsea recall Trevoh Chalobah from Crystal Palace loan

The move could be seen as controversial given Palace had to withdraw Chalobah at short notice during Sunday’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Stockport County.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner initially described the situation as a “contract issue” before further explaining on Tuesday: “He wants to stay here but it’s a decision Chelsea can make.”

Chalobah was a regular starter at Selhurst Park, making 14 appearances during a four-and-a-half-month spell in south London.

The centre-back was previously deemed to be overachieving at Chelsea and trained away from the first-team in a group nicknamed the “Bomb Squad”, which consisted of a dozen unwanted players including England international Rashid Jim Sterling and Ben Chilwell.

But Chalobah spoke to sporting director Paul Winstanley before exercising his option and was convinced he would play at Chelsea upon his return.

Chelsea believe he will re-adapt to west London quicker than any new signing given his links to the club.

However, Chalobah’s long-term future beyond the summer remains in doubt as Chelsea have brought him in for around £25m over the past three transfer windows and are likely to allow him to leave permanently in the summer.

Josh Acheampong, 18, is still considered a first-team player after recently breaking through to the senior team.
