Ghana’s new President John Mahama has dissolved seven ministries as part of efforts to streamline governance and meet fiscal discipline requirements tied to a $3 billion International Monetary Fund bailout. The decision, announced via email, is aimed at cutting costs and improving government efficiency as Ghana continues to face economic woes including high inflation, youth unemployment and unsustainable debt. In an emailed announcement, Mahama stressed that the restructuring was a step towards stabilizing the economy and fulfilling campaign promises of economic recovery. He plans to reinvest the savings from dismantling these ministries into key areas such as infrastructure, education and health care. The move reflects the Mahama government’s commitment to meet conditions negotiated by the International Monetary Fund in 2022 and address growing citizen dissatisfaction over economic hardship.
