How did Premier League clubs avoid PSR charges?

BBC Sports Football Correspondent Nick Mashiter:

Villa were required to sell players last summer to comply with the rules and as of May 31, 2023, had a loss of £119m from their accounts.

Villa said at the time that the figures were “in line with the strategic business plan” and within the PSR set by the Premier League.

In the early summer, in order to comply with the rules before June 30, they sold midfielder Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42m and Moussa Diaby for £50m. Joined Saudi side Al-Ittihad for £900, while they also allowed Tim Iroegbunam to join for £900 Moved to Everton for £10,000 and allowed Omari Kellyman to be sold to Chelsea for £19 million.

However, Diaby, signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £51m in July 2023, and Spanish centre-back Paulo Torres, signed from Villarreal for £31.5m in July 2023, are both said to be included in these accounts .

Villa recorded a £300,000 profit in their accounts for the 2021-22 season, helped by the £100m sale of England midfielder Jack Grealish to Manchester City.

However, Maguire said profits from the sale would be lost in the next three-year cycle of 2022-2025.

Villa voted against the introduction of PSR rules – which came into effect in 2015-16 – and in June co-owner Nassef Sawiris said he was considering legal action.

Sawiris told the Financial Times this summer: “Some of the rules actually reinforce the status quo rather than creating upward mobility and liquidity.

“These rules make no sense and are not good for football.”
