The Sudanese military has recaptured the city of Wad Madani, the capital of Gazira province, from the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after more than a year of control. The city, once a refuge for displaced families, was occupied by MSF in December 2023, months after a civil war broke out between the army and the MSF leadership. The war, which has lasted since April 2023, has killed more than 28,000 people, displaced 14 million people and affected many regions by famine. The Sudanese government hailed the victory as a step toward restoring stability, and celebrations broke out in the city. Doctors Without Borders has suffered heavy losses recently, losing control of key areas such as Khartoum and parts of Darfur. Meanwhile, international bodies have condemned the atrocities of the conflict, with the United States imposing sanctions on Reporters Without Borders leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and investigating allegations of genocide and war crimes.
