Congolese Army Retakes Key Towns in Eastern DRC Amid Ongoing Conflict – Africa.com
Congolese troops have retaken several towns in conflict-ridden eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, including Ngugu in the Masisi region, after months of rebel occupation. Other areas recaptured as part of the joint military operation include Lumbishi, Ruzirantaka and Kamatale. Despite the army’s victory, fierce fighting continues, with the M23 and other insurgents advancing in some areas. While villagers celebrate the army’s victory, they remain concerned about continued violence and insecurity. Aid agencies also report dire conditions with displaced persons camps and stretched resources. Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been mired in conflict for decades, with more than 100 armed groups fighting for territory in the mineral-rich region. The conflict has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, killing an estimated 6 million people and displacing 7 million since 1998.
