Warren Gatland expects change if Wales’ losing run goes on in Six Nations

Gatland says he has done some soul-searching following Wales’ poor results in 2024.

“There’s no doubt it’s challenging,” he admits, because his job is “all about performance and results.”

“When you’re dealing with professional rugby there’s a fair amount of criticism and that’s completely understandable,” he added.

“You question yourself and think about what you can do to improve and make an impact.

“It’s also about striking a balance between not making radical changes and finding some tweaks to improve.”

Gatland’s second spell in charge of Wales contrasts sharply with his first 12-year spell in charge, when the national team won three Grand Slams and four Six Nations titles and reached two World Cups. Semifinals.

“It’s also about looking back at history and asking why we’ve been successful in the past and what have I done to make teams that have won trophies in the past so successful,” he added.

“It’s about making sure you don’t give up on some of the ideas that have made you successful as a team.

“Sometimes you can lose a little bit. You have to trust your instincts and your experience.”

Gatland added: “I thrive on challenges. In the past, when people looked down on us and didn’t expect us to do well, we did really well.

“I’m proud of what I’ve achieved in sport, whether it’s with Wasps, Wales or the British and Irish Lions.

“Especially at the World Cup where we’ve had four games where we’ve been pretty good and just unlucky not to get to the semi-finals and potentially get to the final.”

Tierney said there will be another review of Wales’ progress following the Six Nations.

After naming his squad for the competition, Gatland said he had not yet been given a set of must-achieve results.

Gatland said: “I’ve never been given a target in the past, I’ve never been given a number of ‘you have to win this many games’.”

“It’s always been like that. Everyone talks about it being challenging, but we definitely need to show improvement.”
